The History of Alicante

The popular tourist destination of Alicante, found on the popular and stunning Costa Blanca in Spain, is a wonderful place in which to spend your holiday. Well known amongst Europeans as a great destination for sun, sea and nightlife it attracts a large number of tourists annually. The city boasts a well developed transport network and tourist facilities.

History

The city itself, like many others in the area, was subject to numerous waves of different population entering the city, who all left their mark on the area. Most notable perhaps is the influence left on the city of Alicante by the Arab tribes that took over the area. The moors played a large role in the design of the area and its streets and layout can in part be owed to them. When Alfonso finally captured the city back to Spanish hands in 1246 it began the rise of the city from part of the Valencian province to the city that we know today.

Over time the city and surrounding area began to develop itself as a prime centre of trade with active ports and harbours and commercial activities that took it to being one of the most important commercial cities in Spain. Damaged during a 7 day long bombing campaign during the French Armada, followed by the Spanish war of Succession in which its castle was partly damaged, the city played an important role in the independence war in the 1800s. This brought some setbacks to the city which began to redevelop and come to the fore again following the independence wars.

It re-established itself as an important port and holiday villas spain, and developed an extensive railroad network on which to transport goods. The city continued to expand beyond the old traditional boundaries of the old walls and the old town and developed new commercial areas outside the walls, which were later torn down.

Present Day

The city has now diversified itself from its original commercial activities and is now heavily reliant on tourism and also has a well established service sector. Its tourism network is well developed with an extensive range of facilities, accommodations and activities that cater to all. The area and city therefore receive thousands of tourists throughout the year, mainly in summer but also during the still-pleasant winter months. A range of great restaurants, cafes, beaches and parks coupled with historical and cultural activities ensure the city remains popular year round.
